With tens of thousands of people out of work and desperate to get back into the ranks of the employed, hiring managers are being advised to be ever more vigilant about resume fraud. Of course, you’d never lie about your education and experience. But the head of a New York City-based background checking firm reports that after the dot.com bubble burst, “as people were unemployed more, the accuracy of the data [on resumes] fell off.” Those who are tempted should know that employers will be more apt to verify details regarding their work histories, including start and end dates and their reason for leaving, and will attempt to talk to people other than the references provided by the job candidate. The Internet will also hinder someone attempting to reinvent themselves on the fly. “Anybody who doesn’t Google [a prospective] employee creatively is making a mistake,” the sleuthing agency head advises.
